I am a clock-watcher. Some days I start counting down to the boys’ 7pm bedtime before noon. By 8pm the house is clean and I feel young and free! I can do anything I want–except leave the house. Yet no matter how tough a day it has been, sometime between 11pm and midnight, I start to get The Baby Munchies. I haven’t seen mah babes in a while. I want to hold their warm bodies and squish their dewy thigh fat and kiss their sweet heads. I want to snack on their little cheekies.
I creep into their room and have a look. I try not to wake them up, but if one of them just happens to be in-between sleep cycles–or if they’re both asleep but I just can’t help myself–I may just shmoogle one a little in the rocking chair. Ahh! They’re so delightfully placid, so heavy and cuddly in the middle of the night.
Never is my clock-watching at a higher pitch than on Tuesday. Tuesday I have four hours of babysitting in which to run a week’s worth of errands and buy a week’s worth of groceries. More than one of those hours will be spent in traffic. Lame. Anyway, on Tuesdays I jump out of bed like a child on Christmas morning. The babysitter is coming today! At 10am I burst out of my house like the whole Colorado river exploding through the Hoover Dam. I’m out! I can move at the speed of unencumbered!
I look forward to those babysitting hours like an oasis in the Sahara. Every week I think it will be physically impossible for me to miss them while I’m gone. I’ll be too happy to be moving lightly and efficiently through the world, or too frazzled trying to get through my over-packed to do list in 3 hours to even think about them. Yet every week, The Baby Munchies set in in about half and hour into my trip. I miss my little men. I wonder what they’re doing. I wish I’d brought just one with me! Sometimes I do.
And sometimes…. Now don’t tell anyone about this. I haul everyone to the grocery store on Monday so I can go to the movies by myself on Tuesday. Muahahahaha. These pictures were taken this afternoon. Guess where I’m going tomorrow. Shhhhh!
