I’m giddy with nerd delight over this spice rack. If you’re looking for the puns scroll down. If you want to buy the digital download to make your own set (!!!) you can find them in my Etsy shop.
A couple months ago, I ordered these spice racks from the UK. I had planned to make my own spice rack for the back of the pantry door, but I thought this was an even better use of space on the side of the pantry shelves. Super convenient. I could have stopped there. This solution was ultra-functional, but the spice rack still committed the cardinal sin of being both ugly and unfunny. Undateable. After maximiizing the crap out of spice jars, I finally found the perfect fit. Nice, right? And if you think I’m using that door to hide the rest of my pantry from the likes of Jennifer McArthur who put crown molding in hers, you’re darn right I am. But it gets better. After I ordered the jars I went crazy. What if I designed my own labels? What if they were like black and white movie subtitles that used the spice names in quotes? What if they were movie quote puns of spices? Too much? Never too much. Now, we didn’t get a full 48 movie quotes. Some are Shakespeare, some are cultural references, some are song lyrics, but mostly they are stage and screen. I used a dry erase marker to mark where the labels would go so that they could be nearly perfectly even as well as visible above the shelf support. I thought of most of the labels, but Kent helped me with several puns, especially the ones I was stuck on. I think his best work is, “This is no mere Ranger. He is TARRAGON, Son of Arathorn.” He even came up with a few that weren’t spices, like “GREEN TEA, phone home.” (Never owned green tea, not surprisingly) and “CAPERS diem. Sieze the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.” I think my best work is “Yippee CAYENNE, Mother PEPPER.” I’m also pretty proud of, “What we have here is a failure to CUMIN-icate.” and “I coulda been a CORIANDER.” Why are all my good ones guy movies? Oh, there’s “The Turkish diplomat GARAM MASALA is dead?!” That was my first one. Oh, Pamuk. We hardly knew ye. Okay, okay here they are. Points to anyone who can name all the screen and stage references without google or similar aid. Now, I know after reading this many of you are thinking I have way too much time on my hands, but you’re wrong. I spent it all on my spice rack. If you want a set of these labels, they are now available on Etsy!
