Remember when I instituted the no food in the car rule? I hoped to 1) keep my car cleaner, thereby saving money and effort by having to clean it less often, 2) save money by not buying fast food, and 3) improve eating habits by not buying fast food and mowing down boxes of Teddy Grahams in the car.
We have definitely done 1. We have mostly done 2 and 3 as well. As I was trying to pick up a package from the UPS counter yesterday, we had to break 2.
When people find out I didn’t take Kent’s last name (gasp!) I think they assume this is a trial marriage that I’m not that committed to. We’ll just see how this goes before we do anything drastic like changing names, mmmkay? They also invariably ask whether I run into trouble boarding planes with my kids or getting them registered for stuff, etc. The answer is no, no, no, nope, never.
This is, I believe, the first time in almost 10 years that I have had any kind of trouble having a different last name than Kent. (Although he might add the dozens and dozens of times he’s been called Mr. Craw to that list.) Because we recently moved, my license didn’t match the delivery address on the package, and my name didn’t match Kent’s, so they wouldn’t give me the package. I showed them everything I could think of including a bill from Fairfax Honda with my name at the new address, my checkbook with Kent’s and my names on it, and even the kids’ insurance cards with Kent’s last name on them, but no. They would not surrender the package.
All of this fuss left us on the road during lunch. The kids were asking for fries, but I said
Me: Remember we have a new rule that we’re not eating in the car.
Fluffy: This eating in the car sure is a hungry rule.
They had been really wrung out at the UPS place which is all the way in Chantilly, so I took pity on them and shepherded them all into Burger King where we…
…ate in the car!
I had to explain the irony of this a couple of times to Fluffy, but when she got it, she thought it was “Uh-lawious!” This was the first time we’ve ever been inside Burger King. I had no idea it was so cool.
To sum up, my car is clean, Burger King has a diner vibe, UPS is looking out for the security of our packages, and…I’m making Kent change his last name.
For those of you waiting on tenterhooks to find out whether we got the loan and the teardown (thanks for your comments, prayers, thoughts and emails!), I will know for sure today by 3pm. I’m not counting any chickens yet, but I will say we have eggs. Visible eggs.
