This is what my 4-year-old tells me as we are painting this ornament which is one of the presents from her advent calendar below (the paints were another). Where has she learned this phrase? From me, of course, as I’ve repeated it as a mantra over the years while we’ve decorated cookies, cakes and pumpkins, and assembled dozens of crafts. It is far from instinctive for me to let Fluffy experiment instead of wrenching the project from her hands and transforming it into my vision–but I stop myself, or rather, I temper myself to some degree. I let her paint the white parts blue and if she really wants polka dots with stripes, I do it.
“I’m trying to give you some creative control.”
