I want to be like Fluffy when I grow up. She is a much sweeter person than I am. Not a whit of snark or sass or dark humor. She likes a good poop joke, but other than that, she’s just a guileless innocent.
Last month when the buyers of our townhouse were hassling us for the umpteenth time, I was discussing their latest post-sale request with Kent.
Kent: I can’t even believe them. I think I’ve been patient and calm throughout this, but now I’m starting to get angry.
Me: I know. I keep making up speeches of all the nasty things I wish I could say to them.
Kent: Like what?
Me: (extended, punchy diatribe)
Fluffy: (sitting quietly in the room listening to us when we both assumed she was watching her show) You know what I think, Mom?
Me: What do you think, Fluffs?
Fluffy: I think that Heavenly Father loves them, too. He loves you, but he loves them, too, and he wouldn’t want you to be mean to them.
Me: (scrambling hard to regain moral high-ground) That’s right, honey. Mommy’s not going to be mean to them. You just can’t be mean to people even if you sometimes want to.
I dropped by Fluffy’s elementary school today to pick up her registration forms. As we parked, a timid voice from the back seat asked,
Fluffy: Is this my first day of Kindergarten?
Me: Oh, no, honey. We’re just picking up your papers. Did you think you were going to school today?
Me: And were you a little bit nervous?
Fluffy: Yeah. I was a lot nervous.
Me: Oh, sweetie, it’s not today, and when it is, there won’t be anything to be nervous about.
We looked over the school and the playground and picked up her papers. As we were leaving, Fluffy lingered on the steps.
Fluffy: Now I wish I was staying at school today! I wish we could just fill out the papers and buy our supplies and come right back and they’d let me go to school today!
I know I’ve been a real grump during the dark days of real estate uncertainty because Fluffy and I have had the following conversation a few times these past weeks:
Fluffy: Are you happy?
Me: Um, yes. I’m totally happy today. Are you happy?
Fluffy: I’m happy because you’re happy!
Great. More pressure.
