Back to normal after leading a life of crime yesterday with a surprisingly successful April Fools joke. Says Angela of the overwhelming facebook well-wishing, “If I were you, I would feel like more and more of a jerk, every time there was a new complimentary comment. You big liar.” Precisely.
Happy Cherry Blossom Festival, everyone!
But where are the blooms? Weird weather brought changes to the initial forecasts for peak blooms this year. On March 4th, the National Park Service said peak would be between April 8th and 12th. This was before all those pesky March snow storms. Now the Washington Post Capital Weather Gang has said (as of March 27th) that the peak will be April 11th-15th. But who knows? We could have a couple April blizzards this week, and throw it right off again.
On my to do list this year:
Cherry Blossom Festival Fireworks! The trees won’t be blooming, but I’m still such a sucker for fireworks. It’s this Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 8:30 p.m. at the Southwest waterfront: 600 Water Street, SW.
Cherry Blossom Cupcakes at Georgetown Cupcake White Chocolate Raspberry is still my all-time favorite, and I was a little sad to see it got pushed back to May this year instead of appearing in April because of the cherry blossom festival, but the cherry blossom cupcakes are really terrific as well.
Kenwood Neighborhood in Maryland
I don’t have pictures because I had to keep drive, but this neighborhood tour did not disappoint. Especially if you’re an inveterate house-oggler anyway.
National Arboretum Nothing can quite compare to the density of the Tidal Basin cherries, but we love the National Arboretum for the azaleas (and here), and are excited to see “over 40 varieties” of cherry trees in bloom there.
And of course the Tidal Basin. This year I remembered to book my Saturday paddle boat in advance! I guess Fluffy was right when she said I was the best mom in the universe.
I must say this year outings seem infinitely more do-able with the boys slightly more flexible nap schedule and nursing but a distant memory. Now I’ve just got to make sure all the outfits are in order. I would hate to destroy the cherry blossom festival with a mismatched family.
