This was the first year we dared take the kids out to something that began at 8:30, and we are so glad we did.
We had a ton of fun. The fireworks were very good, pretty long, and not the low-budget version we expected. Fireworks over the water were really cool. Peppers was dancing and clapping and Fluffy was loving it. Salty was too tired past his bedtime to hold it together, but the other kids were having the best time ever.
We of course got there an hour later than we thought we wanted to, paid $8 for parking, waited a solid 25 minutes in line (I timed it) at the food truck palooza for some pretty good pulled pork bbq, and crept out of the city at a maddening pace in traffic–but it was awesome!! We would definitely do it again. Our food truck was right next to the Army Blues band which put on a great show, and the whole thing was just very festive as a festival should be.
We didn’t see any cherry blossoms because it was dark, and they weren’t fully blooming yet. We are supposed to be going back a couple of times this week/weekend. Rain showers threaten to destroy our paddle boating excursion, but fingers crossed.

Difficulty Level: Moderate. The festival was crazy busy the evening of the fireworks, so negotiating the crowds with a stroller was difficult.
- We felt the parking lot on Water St. (about 600 Water St. SW, maybe) was a bargain at $8 compared to the shuttle parking which adds at least an hour to your time.
- The food truck convention was awesome, but the lines were painfully long and several of the food trucks had run out of their main dishes by 7:45. Maybe they will get it together next year, but be warned.
Fluffy Fun Factor (Kindergartener Rating): “This was the best night of my life!” Yeah, your tooth came out and you saw fireworks. “Yeah, and I had bbq and Sprite! I can’t wait to tell all the kids at school, but I don’t exactly want to make them jealous.”
