Try this outing yourself:
Difficulty level: Easy. Lots of walking and much of it hilly, but with a good stroller, this one is easy to take kids to by yourself.
- If you’re not up to strollering over a mile or two, consider taking the bus tour of the major sites from the Visitor Center. $8.75 for adults, $4.50 for kids 3 and over.
- Sunscreen, hats, and weather-appropriate attire are vitally important. This place is scorching hot, so if you’re going to walk it in summer, bring water.
- Before you leave the Visitor Center and start your hike, use the bathroom (!) and plan your trip to see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns.
Fluffy Fun Factor (Preschooler rating): Medium fun. “My favorite part was being with Jenni.”
My brother was in town last weekend and wanted to see Arlington National Cemetery, the White House powder room, and Georgetown Cupcake. Two out of three ain’t bad. The other two times I have been to Arlington Nat’l Cemetery have been in July including when I was a Girls Nation Senator and they made us walk acre after acre in the sweltering heat wearing dresses, nylons and heels. This was much more pleasant. All the fresh wreaths on the gravestones smelled wonderful.
I love walking around with my brother, sister and brother-in-law because they are all firmly in the over-six-foot club. Sometimes I look at pictures of me with my normal-sized friends and think, “Woah! Am I really that tall? Sheeesh!” I feel very at home among the long leggedy beasties. We all happened to be wearing black coats and jeans as well, so it felt like we were as intimidating as giant Russian maffiosi. With babies. And a little girl swathed in pink.
